There aren’t many things on the face of this Earth that can scare Gina Carano.

Not when the 29-year-old Texan survived years getting kneed in the ribs for a living as a professional mixed martial arts champion.

But standing on the ledge of a Dublin rooftop six stories above the pavement and jumping to a neighboring building proved to be one of them.

Only a thin wooden board stood between a quick end to her blossoming career as a action star midway through shooting her biggest movie to date, “Haywire.”

“I’m actually afraid of heights — well I was before this,” says Carano, laughing. “They had me at 5 o'clock in the morning on these icy rooftops in Dublin. If I tripped in this cold weather or made any type of mistake and missed this board, I’m screwed, and you’re sitting there thinking about your family — is this really worth it?

“Finally, two of the stuntmen walked me across it very slowly with my heart pumping and then eventually I worked my way up to where I was jumping and leaping across it over and over and over. It was really exhilarating to get past that fear. From then on I was crawling up and down the buildings.

“Since then I’ve been trying to pick up mountain climbing.”

In “Haywire,” opening Friday, director Steven Soderbergh has his new-found star doing a lot more than just climbing for the film’s 93 action-packed minutes. Carano stars as Mallory Kane, an elite operative in a shadowy security company contracted by the U.S. government and run by her boss and lover, Kenneth (Ewan McGregor). After a shady operation in Barcelona, Kane finds herself betrayed by her former employer and on the run for her life.
